Month of May Greetings, Integral City-zens and Friends of Integral City

Today's Integral City Sparkie for the City Mesh:

We are all tomorrow’s food. Thus, not only does a developmental or evolutionary view generously give to each period its own important truths, it gives to the present its own appropriate humility.
Wilber, K., Marriage of Sense and Soul, New York, Random House, 1998, p. 207

The theme for this newsletter is the cycle of breaking down and breaking through.

 1.  Two years ago, I keyed the article Leadership to the Power of 8 (read it at http://integralcity.com/Ezine%20Files/Ezine%20jul%200805%20iss4.html ) .  This was in response to seeing the demands for modern leadership through the eyes of Jared Diamond, Thomas Friedman and Thomas Barnett.  A third Thomas has come into my life in the last year: Thomas  Homer-Dixon.  I heard Thomas Homer-Dixon speak at the World Future Society in Toronto in July 2006. Director of the Trudeau Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies and Professor of Political Science at University of Toronto, he spoke about his book The Ingenuity Gap. Last week I heard Thomas Homer-Dixon speak to his most recent book, The Upside of Down: Catastrophe, Creativity and the Renewal of Civilization . Thomas Homer-Dixon is the first person I have observed weave together as an explanation for our modern civilization's intractable dilemmas, the living system resilience model of Hollings and the complexity model of civilizations (proposed by Joseph Trainer amongst others). The Upside of Down is an edgy review of five tectonic plates that are grinding against one another at a global level, causing social and cultural eruptions and earthquakes: population imbalances, energy shortages, environmental damage, global warming and rich/poor gaps. The effects of this quintet of massive disturbances are multiplied even further by the densification of global connectivity and the disproportional capacity of small groups to destroy physical and human capital. Thomas H-D points with concern at four particularly vulnerable flashpoints in the world: Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, China and Europe. He proposes that the natural cycle of human (and living) systems makes it inevitable that the world as we know it will experience breakdowns before it breaks through into new ways of organizing individual lives, cities and global governance. To mitigate the breakdowns and shift from unrecoverable disaster to possible new futures he proposes that we need four key leadership qualities. We must bring good strategic management to the five tectonic pressures. We need to cultivate a " prospective mind"  willing and able to grapple with difficult, threatening scenarios while seeking opportunistic outcomes. We need to design resilience into key survival systems like energy and food networks. We need to be ready to shift breakdown into breakthrough when it happens. For a fascinating illustration of his points via a personal tour of the ancient structures of Rome, check out the book at here http://www.integralcity.com/DiscoveryZone/Books/bookshelf%20intelligent.html .

2. The Creative Skills Training Council might be an excellent resource for finding and learning breakthrough skills. Check it out at http://www.cstc-apa.com/

3.  If we are to develop prospective mind and integral skills to address the challenges Thomas Homer-Dixon outlines, we need to be able to comprehend and translate messages from people who have differing worldviews and speak different languages. A full description of the SDi Level 2 workshop  Messaging for Change; Changing Messages  is available at http://www.integralcity.com/DiscoveryZone/Training/SDiL2%20messaging%20Wpg%202007.html .  Find out 10 reasons you should attend to learn how to speak and translate eight different worldview languages. Spiral Dynamics integral Level 2 Certification Training 2007, with Dr. Don Beck. Winnipeg Sept. 11-13, 2007 .

4. The Upside of Down highlights the continuous need we have to manage five tectonic plates. Integral assessments, scorecards and vital signs monitors give users whole system views for assessing life conditions, criteria for identifying the change states of living systems and perspectives for connecting the relationships between individuals, teams, organizations and communities within human systems. A full description of the SDi Level 2 workshop Vital Signs of Change: Beyond Strategic Planning to Systemic Wellbeing is available at http://www.integralcity.com/DiscoveryZone/Training/SDiL2%20vital%20signs%20Toronto%202007.html   Find out who should attend and the benefits of the course curriculum for leaders who want to effectively make a difference. Spiral Dynamics integral Level 2 Certification Training 2007, with Christopher Cooke.  Toronto Oct. 16-18, 2007.
